Building Health - Planning and designing for health and happiness
22 January 2010

On Friday 22 January 2010, the Institute for Sustainability, Health and Environment (ISHE) will host an important one-day conference, 'Building Health', at UWE's Frenchay Campus. The conference, organised by a number of high-level stakeholders, will bring together practitioners and academics across the health and built environment fields to discuss and debate vital issues in this area.

How can we create environments that encourage health & well-being?

Today there is growing recognition of the impact that the built environment has on public health. Planning and design can play a pivotal role in tackling today’s urgent challenges such as sedentary lifestyles, obesity and health inequality. Housing growth and regeneration provide opportunities to ‘build in’ health from the start and to improve existing environments.

Building Health brings together professionals, academics and policy-makers to share inspirational stories of success and identify how we can work together more effectively.

Speakers include:
Wulf Daseking, Director of City Planning; Freiburg Irena Bauman, Bauman Lyons Architects; Mike Kelly, Director, Centre for Public Health Excellence, NICE; Sarah Gaventa, Director, CABE Space; Richard Cass, Cass Associates and CABE Commissioner; Ben Cave, Ben Cave Associates; Russell Jones, Glasgow Centre for Population Health.
Chair: Judy Orme, Director of the Centre for Public Health Research, University of the West of England, Bristol.
